FCA was hired to perform renovations to the existing Emergency Department based on plans developed by Huddy Healthcare Solutions LLC. The scope included renovations, alterations, and interior expansion of the Emergency Department that aligns with the goals of the campus Master Plan. The project was completed in multiple phases, with 3 major phases and several minor or sub-phases.
The Main walk-in entrance renovation is designed to improve circulation and create central work areas for Care Initiation, a new Results Waiting area, new Radiology spaces, and a dedicated Pediatric area. In addition, a zone exists for a dedicated Pediatric ED, and the existing areas were renovated to increase treatment room capacity and for use as an Observation Unit with flexible census capacity as the project includes new Resuscitation Rooms, a new CT area, and dedicated Behavioral Health Treatment/Observation areas.
The Interior Design takes inspiration from the surrounding coastal towns, relating a sense of place to the community using the ED. A wayfinding Strategy was developed that created unique iconography that is assigned to each POD. These Icons were abstracted into linework and used to create custom wall protection within each exam room. The colors and Icons assist the staff in guiding patients and families to the correct area within the ED. This was especially important as the expanded ED was substantially larger than the existing space. The Icons are used at entry points to each Pod or Zone.
With a sizable geriatric population, the crispness and contrast of the selected colors were considered, and within the Behavioral pod, colors are muted to be mindful of patients who may be agitated.
