The renovation and expansion of the existing inpatient behavioral health unit at Atlantic Health/Morristown had several key initiatives to improve patient care. Expanding the bed unit capacity and increasing the number of single bed rooms was a top priority. They also were committed to supporting patient health by providing an array of socialization spaces for structured and unstructured use. To make these spaces successful and safe for staff, the team also proposed modifying the plan to accommodate positive visualization of all key public parts of the unit from a single clinical control station. FCA shaped a unit that is responsive to “psych safe criteria” in terms of layout and fit-out as well as response to current Guidelines for Construction. Key to the planning of the unit was the broad involvement and input of key administrators, clinicians and physicians.
